Montgomery Marriage License Office
Marriage licensing is handled by the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court, through the Marriage License Department. Applications are completed online and finalized by Webex video conference. Applicants may log in from different locations. A Montgomery County marriage license can be used anywhere in Pennsylvania, and a Pennsylvania license from another county can be used for a ceremony in Montgomery County.
Applicants must be 18. Each applicant needs government photo identification. If a person was previously married, the county requires the most recent divorce decree or death certificate. If applicants cannot speak English, an independent translator with valid photo ID must join the video conference. The county also notes that blood relatives through first cousins may not marry.
The license is not valid until three days after the Webex or in-person appointment issue date, and it is valid for 60 days from the issue date. That timing can affect ceremony planning, copy requests, and later record searches. If the license was issued by Montgomery County, the county marriage search and the Clerk of Orphans' Court are the correct local record paths.
The county marriage license source is shown in the image captured from the official marriage licenses page.
That page is the core source for application timing, Webex procedure, eligibility, and required documents.
How to Apply for a Marriage License
The county says to apply at least two weeks before the ceremony so there is time to correct rejected applications and schedule the Webex conference. The license is emailed by the end of the conference. In-person appointments are reserved for emergency three-day waiver situations with documentation, but the process still starts online.
- Start the application through the county's online marriage license portal.
- Upload or prepare government photo ID and any divorce decree or death certificate needed for prior marriages.
- Schedule and attend the Webex video conference, with both applicants present from the same or different locations.
- Pay the listed license fees through the county process.
- Use the emailed license after the three-day waiting period and before the 60-day validity period expires.
The online application portal is shown in the captured image from the official marriage license application.
The application portal is the start point even when an emergency in-person waiver appointment is later needed.
Marriage License Application Fields
The research captured search and result fields from the county marriage license system rather than a full application form inventory. The visible marriage search fields are still useful because they show how county marriage records are indexed and what facts can help locate a license after issuance.
| Field / Parameter | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Applicant1FirstName / Applicant1LastName | Unspecified | Visible official query parameters; partial name support indicated. |
| Applicant1Surname | Unspecified | Separate surname field. |
| Applicant1Gender | Unspecified | Default value BOTH; full options not exposed. |
| Applicant2FirstName / Applicant2LastName | Unspecified | Same pattern as applicant 1. |
| BookNumber / FileNumber | Unspecified | Useful when known. |
| FileDateFrom / FileDateTo | Unspecified | Date range search. |
| MarriageDateFrom / MarriageDateTo | Unspecified | Date range search. |
| IncludeSoundsLike | No | Optional checkbox or boolean setting. |
Application requirements and search fields are not identical. The application process requires identity and eligibility proof, while the search system is built to find an existing record by applicant names, dates, file number, book number, or sound-like matching. For a copy request, the county specifically asks for the complete name of the husband or wife at the time of marriage.
Montgomery Marriage and Divorce Fees
The county lists a detailed marriage-license fee total and separate marriage-copy fees. Divorce copies follow the Prothonotary document-request rules. The research did not locate a divorce filing fee for this page, so the table uses only fees captured from official county sources.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Montgomery County marriage license fee | $39.50 |
| Pennsylvania writ tax | $0.50 |
| Act 151 Domestic Violence | $10.00 |
| Act 222 Children's Fund | $10.00 |
| Certified copy of marriage record | $25.00 |
| Total listed marriage license cost | $85.00 |
| Marriage application and certificate, two seal copy | $50.00 |
| Divorce certified copy by mail | $5.50, plus $9.50 search fee if case number is unknown |
| General Prothonotary copies | $0.25 per page |
| Docket printouts | $1.75 per page |
| Certified Prothonotary documents | $5.50 per certified document plus $0.25 per page |
Payment methods differ by office and request type. Marriage-record requests list check or money order, credit, and debit card. Prothonotary divorce decree requests by mail should not include cash and should use certified check or money order. If the request is in person, office staff can confirm current accepted payment options before copies are produced.
Look Up Montgomery Marriage Records
The Clerk of Orphans' Court maintains marriage records for licenses issued by Montgomery County. The county states that marriage records from 1885 to present are maintained and open to public viewing. Searchers may use the county marriage license search, request copies in person, or request by mail with the official Marriage Record Request Form.
A request should include the complete name of the husband or wife at the time of marriage and the proper fee. County research identified plain copies for family history or personal use, one-seal certified copies for domestic uses such as Social Security or a driver's license name change, and two-seal copies for international or immigration use.
Observed marriage result fields include filed on, file number, applicant names, applicant surnames, gender, issued on, married on, married at, officiant, duplicate on, parent fields, stipulation, legacy, and a select or detail link. Those fields show why name, date, and file-number searches can be useful when a family-history or certified-copy request starts with incomplete facts.
The online marriage search is shown in the image from the official marriage license search.
The search image supports the online lookup route, while certified copies still depend on the county office's copy rules.
Find Montgomery Divorce Records
Divorce records are civil Court of Common Pleas records handled by the Prothonotary, not by the marriage license office. The direct divorce records phone from the research is 610-278-3361. Divorce decrees and certified copies can be requested in person Monday-Friday or by mail.
Mail requests need the case number, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and the required fee. If the case number is unknown, add the search fee captured in the research. Do not send cash by mail; use a certified check or money order. Divorce files can also include sensitive family material, and family records may have protected or redacted content.
The Prothonotary is the civil clerk for divorce, custody, PFA, judgments, liens, name changes, and related civil filings. Montgomery County also has a Willow Grove Prothonotary office, but mailed divorce decree requests should follow the Prothonotary document-request instructions and include enough case detail for staff to locate the file.
Getting Certified Copies
Certified marriage copies come from the Clerk of Orphans' Court for Montgomery County licenses. Certified divorce decrees come from the Prothonotary. The office should match the record: marriage license, marriage certificate, and historical marriage record requests go to the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court; divorce decree requests go to the civil clerk.
Certified records are used when an agency or court requires an official seal. Plain marriage copies may be enough for family history or personal research, but a name change, immigration matter, or foreign use may require the one-seal or two-seal option described by the county. For divorce, the certified decree is usually the document requested when proof of dissolution is needed.
The manifest image from the official obtaining a marriage record page shows the county copy-request source.
That source is the right path for Montgomery County marriage copies, while divorce copies use the Prothonotary document-request process.
Domestic Relations Caveat
Some family filings do not go to the Prothonotary even when a divorce case exists. Montgomery County directs active PACSES child support, spousal support, and alimony pendente lite pleadings during a pending divorce to Domestic Relations. After divorce is finalized, alimony filings go to the Prothonotary.
That split prevents record requests from going to the wrong counter. Marriage licenses and marriage copies are with the Clerk of Orphans' Court. Divorce decrees and civil divorce filings are with the Prothonotary. Active support issues during a pending divorce can be a Domestic Relations matter instead of a Prothonotary filing.
Public access also differs. Montgomery County says marriage records from 1885 to present are open to public viewing. Divorce and family files can include custody, support, PFA, or other sensitive civil filings, so parts of a family case may be redacted, sealed, or handled through another office. Use the record type first, then choose the office.
