Search Montgomery County Court Records

That page sends criminal Court of Common Pleas and Magisterial District Court users to Pennsylvania's UJS Case Search. It also points civil, Prothonotary, Register of Wills, marriage, probate, and Orphans' Court users toward the county Viewer system where those local indexes are available.
The first choice matters. A felony docket, an MDJ traffic citation, a divorce decree, a probate estate, and a marriage license are not held by the same counter. Montgomery County's civil clerk is the Prothonotary; criminal Court of Common Pleas records are kept by the Clerk of Courts; probate and marriage records are handled by the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court. Older, non-digitized, certified, or restricted court records may require an office request even when a docket can be viewed online.

Montgomery County Court Records Fields

The public portal can search by docket number, participant name, citation number, OTN, complaint number, date filed, organization, attorney, calendar event, and other modes. The Pennsylvania Courts docket-sheet page is the source for Common Pleas docket-sheet access, including warnings that public web dockets are not official criminal-history background checks.
That distinction is important because a docket sheet may show a case event while the full paper or electronic file remains with the office that keeps the record.
Montgomery County Court Record Types
Montgomery County court records include more than criminal dockets. Civil Court of Common Pleas filings are maintained by the Prothonotary and can include complaints, petitions, motions, orders, judgments, name changes, custody, divorce, Protection From Abuse matters, landlord-tenant appeals, driver's license suspension appeals, liens, medical malpractice, personal injury, and other civil cases. Criminal Court of Common Pleas records are maintained by the Clerk of Courts and are searched through UJS for public docket information.
Magisterial District Court records cover traffic citations, non-traffic citations, summary cases, preliminary arraignments, preliminary hearings, landlord-tenant complaints, and small civil matters up to $12,000. Probate and Orphans' Court records are kept by the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court. Marriage records for county-issued licenses are also held there, with county research stating that Montgomery County marriage records from 1885 to present are open to public viewing.

Civil court users should not rely on criminal docket search alone because divorce, custody, judgments, liens, and PFA matters route through the civil clerk.

What Montgomery County Court Records Show
A Montgomery County court record usually identifies the court, docket number, county or judicial district, filing date, case type, parties, and current status. Montgomery County Court Record Copies
The Prothonotary's document request page gives the clearest researched copy-fee details for civil and divorce records. General copies are listed at $0.25 per page. Docket printouts are $1.75 per page. Certified copies are $5.50 per certified document plus $0.25 per page. A certified divorce decree request by mail must include the case number, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and $5.50. If the case number is unknown, the research notes a $9.50 search fee. Cash should not be mailed.
Criminal certified court documents are handled through the Clerk of Courts. Probate, estate, Orphans' Court, and marriage copies are handled by the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court. Each office can have different payment methods and copy procedures, so the office that owns the record controls the practical request path.
The copy process is separate from an online docket lookup because a search result may confirm the case while the office supplies the certified copy.
Public Access to Montgomery County Court Records
Pennsylvania public access is layered. The UJS public records resources govern many court-record and docket-sheet processes, while the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law covers Commonwealth and local agency records but treats judicial records differently. For court cases, the practical rule is to use court portals and office-specific copy procedures first. County agency records may require a Right-to-Know request, but court case files are not just ordinary county records.
Criminal history has its own rule. Under 18 Pa.C.S. 9121, Pennsylvania State Police disseminates official criminal history record information. A Montgomery County criminal docket can show charges and outcomes in a court case, but it is not the same as an official criminal-history background check.
That statute-based boundary helps prevent a court-record lookup from being mistaken for a statewide criminal-history product.

Restricted Montgomery County Court Records
Not every Montgomery County court record is public. Juvenile court records are restricted under the Juvenile Act. Expunged records do not appear in public results after the process is complete. Limited-access cases are not public on the UJS web portal. Adoption petitions are filed with the Orphans' Court office but are confidential or restricted. Mental health proceedings and filings with personal identifiers should be treated as sensitive unless a court order or specific access rule applies.
Redactions also matter. Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, minor names, and other protected data may be removed or filed through confidential information processes. Public access can confirm that a record exists, but it may not reveal all documents, all parties, or all event details.

In-person or mail requests should go to the office tied to the record. The main courthouse is the central location for Court of Common Pleas criminal records and criminal payments. Civil and divorce records go through the Prothonotary at One Montgomery Plaza or the Willow Grove office. Probate, Orphans' Court, and marriage records also use One Montgomery Plaza, 4th Floor.
